History of LIL Airport

Lille Airport opened in 1937 and initially served as a military base, later used by the British Royal Air Force at the beginning of the Second World War. In 1940, German forces occupied the aerodrome, stationing the Luftwaffe there and extending the airfield as well as the runways. The landing of the Allies in Normandy put an end to this occupation. The Royal Air Force subsequently stationed its squadrons there once again until the end of the war. It was not until 1947 that the airport resumed commercial aviation.
