Marseilles Provence Airport was built in 1922 and is located just two kilometres from the village of Marignane. Plans to build the airport directly on the outskirts of the city had previously been rejected. Ultimately though, the city planners were proven right, as the city expanded and the airport required more space to serve growing demand. The 130-hectare field outside Marignane was repeatedly expanded in order to cope with the growing volume of passengers. The first commercial flights from Marseilles Provence Airport flew to nearby Marseilles Toulouse. By the end of the 1920s, the cities of Lyon, Paris, Berlin, and Algiers were added as possible destinations for travellers.

During the Second World War, the German Air Force used Marseilles Provence Airport and came close to destroying it entirely in their retreat from French soil in 1944. It was not until 1961 that commercial air travel resumed at Marseilles MRS Airport. For the reopening of the airport, famed architect Fernand Pouillon was commissioned to build a new terminal. This terminal served capacity for several decades until two new terminals were built between 1992 and 1998 in a major effort to expand and redesign the airport.
