Bodo Airport History
The site of today's Bodo Airport first came into use in the 1920s for postal flights and seaplanes. When the German Wehrmacht began the invasion of Norway in 1940, the Royal Air Force came to Bodo to help mount a defence, building the first solid runways from wooden planks resting on the shallow swampland. However, this wasn’t enough to stave off German occupation. The Luftwaffe took over the airfield, equipped it with a concrete runway, and used it as a military air base.
After the war’s conclusion, Bodo Airport remained unchanged until the 1950s when it came into use by NATO and underwent extensive renovation. The airport then began serving civilian flights in 1952. In 1990, a new terminal with 11 gates opened, three of which have enclosed walkways. At the beginning of 2017, further expansion plans were agreed. Today, military and commercial aircraft as well as business and private jets to and from Bodo Airport connect the region to the wider world. Almost two million passengers and around 44,000 aircraft movements are served by the airport annually.
