The History of Stockholm Arlanda Airport
Not long after the Swedish capital’s first airport – Stockholm Bromma – had reached its initial capacity, the Swedish parliament agreed in 1946 to the construction of a second airport in the capital. Construction began in 1952 with a simple and cheaply built runway. Happily, that original runway was quickly superseded by a concrete runway in 1960. Stockholm Arlanda Airport was officially open in April 1962 and the airport began serving commercial air travel soon after.
In the seventies and eighties, the airport underwent a number of improvements, which, as the air travel industry boomed, were designed primarily to increase the capacity of Stockholm Arlanda. Today, Stockholm Arlanda Airport has four terminals, three runways and a total of 61 gates. The airport plays host to more than 24 million passengers and 230,000 flights annually, and has exclusive premises for VIP guests.
