Originally, Edinburgh Airport was not planned as a commercial airport for civilian passengers. After the aerodrome, then called the Turnhouse Aerodrome, was put into operation in 1916, it served as a military base for the Royal Air Force. During both world wars, numerous squadrons used the aerodrome as the United Kingdom’s most northerly air defence base. After the Second World War, the military airfield was gradually converted into a civilian airport with the first regular civilian service to London starting in 1947. In the following years, commercial service was expanded, the runway extended, and a new terminal built. However, the airport continued to be used by the Royal Air Force until 1960 when it transferred ownership to the British Ministry of Aviation, which was incorporated into the BAA (British Airport Authority).
The number of passengers grew steadily as time went on. From 2015 to 2016 alone, the number of passengers increased from 11.1 million to 12.3 million, an 11% increase. For that reason, Edinburgh Airport has been expanded and modernised over the course of the decades to serve both larger aircraft and the increasing volume of visitors to the airport.
