Prague Airport PRG History

Prague Airport was opened on the 5th of April 1937 at Ruzyně, a district just outside of the city. It was built once the capacity of Prague Kbely Airport, built in 1919, was no longer sufficient for civilian air travel. The airport was designed by the internationally renowned architect Adolf Benš and was awarded a Gold Medal at the Paris World Exposition of Art and Technology in 1937. The original 108 hectare site has almost tripled in size as a result of numerous renovations and extensions in the subsequent decades. During World War II, the German military occupied the airport and established a pilot school. After the end of the war, PRG Airport was quickly restored and was soon serving commercial air travel again.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Prague Airport changed very little. In 1968, it was again subjected to an invasion during the defeat of the Prague Spring, this time by Soviet paratroopers. After 1989, extensive renovation and modernisation work was carried out, the result of which was two new terminals that are still in use today. In October 2012, the airport, which until then had been called Praha Ruzyně, was renamed "Václav Havel" - in memory of the last president of Czechoslovakia and first President of the Czech Republic who died in 2011.
