The History of Budapest Airport

Prior to construction of today‘s Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), aircraft took off or landed from Mátyásföld Airfield and, as of 1937, Budaörs Airport. However, it soon became apparent that a new airport was needed with capacity for longer runways. Initially known as Ferihegy Airport, the new facility was designed in the shape of an airplane by the architect Károly Dávid and construction began on the selected site about 16 kilometres south of the city. It was completed in 1943, but due to damage incurred during WWII, didn’t officially become Budapest’s international airport until 1950.

Budapest Airport initially had only one terminal – a further two were added in the 1980s. However, following the end of the Cold War, the airport was faced with dwindling passenger numbers and some parts of the buildings were temporarily converted to office use. Passenger traffic began to slowly recover when several budget airlines started to establish connections to Budapest BUD Airport in 2003. In 2011, the international shareholders of the airport’s operating company, Budapest Airport Zrt., gave the airport its current name during Hungarian composer Franz Liszt’s bicentenary celebrations.
