Charter Flights to Olbia Airport: The Gateway to Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda
The port city of Olbia lies on one of the most beautiful coastlines in the Mediterranean – the Costa Smeralda in north-eastern Sardinia. The wild, rugged coast of gold sand beaches is the favourite holiday destination of many luxury travellers. Olbia’s main airport, also known as Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is your quickest means of travelling to the beautiful Costa Smeralda.
Olbia Airport: From Military Airbase to International Airport
The history of air travel in Olbia began when the port city still bore the name of Terranova. Flying boats could land in the harbour and the first buildings there were erected to accommodate them. A landing strip for conventional aircraft followed soon after. On 21st April 1928, the scheduled flight services on the Ostia–Olbia–Cagliari route began, making a flight to Olbia from within Italy possible for the first time.
During the Second World War, Olbia Airport had an exclusive status on account of its being the only airport on Sardinia that was operated to from the mainland. However, this was not the same airport as we know today but in fact one five kilometres away known as the Olbia Venafiorita Military Air Base. All scheduled flights operated from there until the 1970s. It was only after the Meridiana airline was founded by the Ismaili Prince Karim Aga Khan IV that the construction of today’s Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport began. In 1974, the company moved from Venafiorita to today's airport building, where Meridiana still has its headquarters today.
The airport was taken over by private operating company Geasar in 1989. The terminal underwent refurbishments between 2000 and 2004, and the runway was extended in 2009 so that a new terminal for private passengers could open. It is from there that you are now able to catch your private jet at Olbia Airport.
